KCBS Pro Pitmasters
The WV Coalfields Cookoff BBQ State Championships is a KCBS Sanctioned competition. Bring your best BBQ skills and compete in backyard and pro pitmaster cooking categories and win over $13,000 in cash and prizes.
In addition to accumulating points for KCBS end of year awards, participating KCBS BBQ Pro Teams compete to win cash prizes from the City of Welch and our sponsors. The highest number of points accumulated in the KCBS contest are calculated and a Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, and first through fifth place in each meat type will receive awards and cash prizes. The winner of this contest will be invited to go to the American Royal and will be entered in the Jack Daniels contest lotto. Teams will be judged by KCBS certified judges in the following categories, brisket, ribs, pork, and chicken. Each team will be required to cook one pork butt provided by the City of Welch.
Grand Champion: $3500
Reserve Grand Champion: $2500
People’s Choice: $500 (you must provide your own pork butt for this combined backyard and pro category)
Pro Category Prizes: (Brisket, Ribs, Pork, and Chicken) Winners will receive a certificate and cash!

All categories are subject to KCBS Pro Pitmaster Rules. The event will be held rain or shine. Refunds will not be offered.
One 20 amp electric plug will be provided in the KCBS PITMASTER category to each cook site. Additional outlets and amperage are available for a fee for all teams (pro and backyard). See our electrical order form for information. Ice is available for delivery to each cook site and will be available onsite for purchase.
Backyard Division
Not a Pro Pitmaster yet? Add some sizzle and spice to your backyard BBQ skills by trying your hand at our “Backyard” Competition. Overall backyard prizes will be based on the chicken and ribs category. Teams may also compete in the optional backyard pork category. All Categories will receive prizes and certificates! The three top overall winners will receive cash, trophies and prizes! Backyard category winners will receive certificates and prizes for first through third place donated from local businesses.

All competitors must be pre-registered by June 1, 2024.
